Kanika Murarka: How do you Fedora?

We recently interviewed Kanika Murarka on how she uses Fedora. This is part of a series on the Fedora Magazine. The series profiles Fedora users and how they use Fedora to get things done. Contact us on the feedback form to express your interest in becoming a interviewee.

Who is Kanika Murarka?

Kanika Murarka is an undergraduate computer science student and intern at Red Hat. She started using Linux in her sophomore year. In her junior year, she started contributing to open source projects. Murarka’s childhood heroes were Dr. Abdul Kalam and Jessica McKellar. Kanika has a special interest for graphics and animated movies. Inside Out and Monsters University top her list.

Fedora Community

Murarka first got involved with Fedora after meeting Sumantro Mukherjee. Sumantro, who was a Red Hat intern, told her about the pathway to to contribute to Fedora. She then started to contribute to Fedora Quality Assurance (QA). Kanika would like to see the participation of women in Fedora grow. She would like to help bring SIGs to universities that help women become contributors to Fedora. Kanika was impressed with how easy it was for “new contributor to get involved in the Fedora Project.” Murarka describes the Fedora community as “one of the most diverse community projects”.

Kanika contributes to Fedora QA and intends to contribute to the Design and Diversity teams as well. Her work in Fedora started with release validation for Fedora 24. Murarka’s motto is: “Getting packages release-ready and: Tried. Tested. Trusted!”

Murarka said that “knowledge of Linux, eagerness to learn and dedication” are what it takes to become involved in the Fedora Project.Β  She recommends that a new contributor choose an area that motivates them to contribute too.

What hardware and software?

Murarka uses a Lenovo Thinkpad X220 with Fedora 24. The X220 is equipped with an Intel Core i7-2540M CPU. It is a great laptop for development. Kanika prefers using a mouse over the trackpad. She also uses

virt-manager

to do release validation testing on the next upcoming Fedora release.

    • Hi rodorapido, I am a lazy person, so don’t have specific hobbies. But, I like roller skating and sometimes go out to skate around. Also, I prefer tea over coffee. My favourite is masala tea πŸ™‚

Hi Kanika, thanks for your reply! If there is any chance for you to visit Germany I should be grateful to invite you to a big cup of Masala tea. For the time being: enjoy Fedora and keep rolling πŸ˜‰
        Greez, rodo.

How do you manage the issues in SandyBridge Graphics?

Because I have the exact same chip, and a desktop with a Radeon R9 290X, and the Radeon is an order of magnitude better in Gnome 3 than SandyBridge!

Even in Firefox, you need to edit the about:config render options to get rid of a XRender issue with vertical lines (IvyBridge too).
