Linux kernel 4.17 released: help test in Fedora

Version 4.17 of the Linux kernel was officially released earlier this week. Meanwhile, the Fedora kernel team is completing the final integration for this new kernel into Fedora.

To check and test this integration work, the Fedora Kernel and QA teams have organized a test day for Tuesday, June 12. The Fedora Wiki has all the details if you are interested in helping out and testing the new kernel in Fedora.

How do test days work?

A test day is an event where anyone can help make sure changes in Fedora work well in an upcoming release. Fedora community members often participate, and the public is welcome at these events. If you’ve never contributed before, this is a perfect way to get started.

To contribute, you only need to be able to do the following things:

  • Download test materials, which include some large files
  • Read and follow directions step by step

The wiki page for the kernel test day has a lot of good information on what and how to test. After you’ve done some testing, you can log your results in the test day web application. If you’re available on or around the day of the event, please do some testing and report your results.

  3. I gave up on the 4.17 kernel because of frequent locks on Fedora 28 with AMD Rysen 5 1600X processor and RX560 graphics card.
With version 4.18 (4.18.0-0.rc0.git2.1.fc29.x86_64) I never had a lock. The module “amdgpu” is loaded and I have sound with display port connection.
Fedora 29 (Nightly builds) is already fantastic 🙂

I’ve been using 4.17 for some time with Fedora 28 Cinnamon – works perfectly. Currently I’m using 4.18, again working perfectly. It would be nice if the microcode was updated to mitigate the latest Spectre vulnerability.

One thing is missing: the downlaod link or instructions on how to get the kernel to be tested. No, is not in the “What to test” section.

Even more, the “Prerequisites for Test Day” section says:

‘The 4.16 kernel for Fxx from updates-testing or [XYZ koji] if not using the test day image.’

Some links would have been nice.

Aside of this, for me at least, updates-testing is not working:

$ sudo dnf update kernel –enablerepo=updates-testing

    offers 4.16.14-300.fc28 to install.

Even after $ sudo dnf clean all
    Please fix.

  6. When I go to the links, I fail to find officially built and updates-testing published kernel 4.17 build for Fedora 28. What is the correct link?
